Austria: Muslim census begins

The Austrian Islamic Denomination (IGGiO) has begun a census of Austrian Muslims, the organisation announced today (Tues).

IGGiO President Anas Schakfeh said he believed around 100,000 Muslims would be registered in the census.

The Interior Ministry has said there are around 500,000 Muslims in Austria.

Schakfeh added that the census would make possible promulgation of a new constitution for IGGiO that the Austrian office for religious cults had approved last December. Muslims who have reached their majority will be able to vote in internal IGGiO elections later this year.
